While opinions about the popular show, Preachers of L.A. run the gamut, most everyone would have to agree that first lady Myesha Chaney comes across as someone who doesn’t mind taking chances to make an impact, like when shewent to a strip club to reach out to dancers or hosted a “Saved, Sanctified and Sexual” conference.

Most recently, she’s taken to the streets armed with a collection of poignant insights and stories of self-discovery from her own life experiences and from the women she’s met along her journey. Recently, Myesha took a few minutes to talk about her new book, Hiding Behind the Lipstick; the popular show, Preachers of L.A. and she shared what’s next for her. Enjoy!

MYESHA CHANEY - Book Cover1. Tell us about “Hiding Behind the Lipstick.” Where did the concept come from and what is the message you want readers to take away from this book?

Hiding Behind the Lipstick is a safe place for women to be vulnerable and honest with themselves about who they truly are at the core of their being. With everyday examples of women clinging to false identities, overwhelming expectations and nagging lies, Hiding Behind the Lipstick opens the door for candid, life-changing conversations about life, love and the masks we all wear. This concept came as an answer to prayer.

When I saw the condition of the women in my life, I wanted the falsehood to change but I didn’t know how. After preparing for the day, I discovered a profound revelation in the process of putting on makeup and Hiding Behind the Lipstick was birthed.

I want readers to understand that no matter what our scars, past or insecurities look like, we can look in the mirror and love who we are. We no longer have to pretend to be the things that we feel others demand of us. We can be who we were destined to become.

2. Why do you think women are so prone to hide what’s really going on with them?

Women desire to be accepted for who they are. However, many of us are afraid of showing our true selves. In a society that praises beauty, accomplishment, and wealth, it seems we will never be good enough unless we appear to have it all. It is so much easier to cover our imperfections and create the persona that makes us feel most comfortable and well received by our peers.

3. How has Preachers of L.A. affected your life, your family, and your ministry?

Being apart of Preachers of L.A. has definitely affected my life. It has expanded our reach and has allowed me to connect with so many wonderful people. To my surprise, my children really embraced the process of filming and watching themselves on television. Our church has welcomed so many new people into our spiritual family. I have learned how to deal with criticism in a way that I probably couldn’t have under normal circumstances.

4. If there was one thing you could change about your time on Preachers of L.A., what would it be?

Overall, I have had a positive experience being apart of the Preachers of L.A. cast. I have learned that all things work together for the good. All my experiences have taught me things that have caused me to evolve into the person I am today. After watching season one, it was like a mirror. I felt that my personality seemed more reserved than I actually am in real life so I decided during the filming of season two to be very vulnerable and true to myself completely.

5. What other projects do you have in the works right now?

Currently, my husband Wayne and I are co-writing a book on love and relationships. I am traveling on tour with the Hiding Behind the Lipstick experience and preparing to record my sophomore worship album.
