Gospel giant Donnie McClurkin returns to the marketplace with his sixth studio album, a well-conceived and well-executed album of vocal collabos, aptly titled Duets.
The ten-track project features several of his industry friends, including Tye Tribbett, the incomparable Tramaine Hawkins, emerging artist Justin Savage and McClurkin’s cousin, gospel legend John P. Kee.
Standout tracks on Duets include the downright churchy “Write My Name,” featuring Dorinda Clark Cole (one of the best tracks on the project), the worshipful anthem “I Am Amazed,” featuring Erica Campbell and Preashea Hilliard, and the grateful-hearted “I’m Still Here,” featuring the victorious declarations of Tina Campbell.
Also, don’t miss Israel Houghton and Marvin Sapp on the unifying “Come As You Are,” and the feels-so-good “All About the Love,” a super catchy tune that features McClurkin by himself.
If I had to have an issue with it– and this is me being admittedly picky– my only qualm would be that I want more of Donnie McClurkin and less of some of the special guests. Don’t get me wrong– it is SO “Donnie McClurkin” for the guests to be pushed to the forefront, allowed to shine brightly asDonnie steps back. It’s a noble thing, of course, but it also leaves us fans wanting more of him on some of the songs. That said, I’m more than confident that we’ll get it on the next project.
And Duets still gives us plenty of what made us love Donnie McClurkin in the first place– signature songwriting, masterful male vocals and tight vocal arrangements that have become a hallmark of his music. This project doesn’t disappoint. It is a must-have addition to your collection!
