RTP Awards Is Work In Progress – Alfred Ocansey

Award winning TV newscaster, Alfred Ocansey believes the Radio and Television Personality Awards (RTP Awards) scheme has not attained complete perfection and would require continuous improvement to meet the expectations of critics.
According to him, the award scheme is public oriented and that, he explained, makes it susceptible to castigations because of the tendency of individuals holding diverse interests.
Alfred who was crowned the male TV newscaster of the year in the recently held 2017 Adonko RTP Awards says although the awards scheme draws strength from the populace, it is bestowed on awardees to defend the credibility of the crown by virtue of hard work.
Contributing to a review of the event on the Christian Entertainment Review Show (CER Show) last Saturday, he said “I am not expecting a perfect system. Awards that are populace in nature have their controversies. Beyond the comments, any person who wins an award will only justify their position by the hard work they put out there.”
He continued by saying “regardless the controversy, it is an individual thing. Nobody has ever won an award and gets everyone endorsing [it]. A section of people will surely disagree. Those who doubted Joe Mettle for being crowned the artist of the year may probably be rewriting their notes today with the kind of hard work that has come after the awards.”

Alfred who is a former host of the CeR Show now doubles as a newscaster and a presenter for TV3 and 3FM respectively.
As part of the review, Jeshrun Okyere, who emerged the Gospel Show Host of the year, remarked that his victory was the true reflection of the feedback he gets on social media about his performance on air.
The RTP awards since its inception in 2012 has suffered torrid criticisms with respect to its credibility. Some have said it is characterized by selectiveness as against objectivity and that its outcomes are not reflective of the actual views of the public.
Although this year’s event received the highest nominations of 6,500 contestants, it wasn’t spared the regular image damages and controversies.
Peace FM’s Nana Yaw Kesse pulled out under the complaint that for three successive years, the organisers of the event goofed with the spelling of his name plus an added image that was a far cry from the real him.
It is also alleged that Citi FM did not broadcast its adverts which gave the impression that they were not in support of it although some of its presenters were favorites in the race.
What broke the camel’s back was a letter that emerged from the Office of the Vice President which countered messages that H.E. Mahamudu Bawumia would be gracing the event. The organisers were said to have not followed due diligence in that regard.
Reacting to the concerns, the Deputy Communications Director of RTP Awards, Isaac Kyei Andoh is of the view that the Award scheme is credible and that some of the claims leveled against them were misconceptions.
Admitting that the initiative is not immune to mistakes and challenges, he said feedback from participants indicates that the positives outweighed the negatives which, according to him, are a mark of success.
“Sometimes you need to assess yourself and also rely on feedback from others.  The feedback we have received from people who participated in the event shows they were satisfied with how the event turned out this year. We exceeded our expectations,” he stated.
